The Changing Face Of Coffee
There have been many changes in the UK’s interest in coffee in the last 10 – 15 Years. In those early days many establishments that by today’s standards you would think should be serving real (real beans and milk) speciality espresso based coffees such as Cappuccinos, Lattes etc, were content to have Soluble machines which use “Freeze Dried” coffee granules and powdered milk. Some would even have tins of instant coffee! Thankfully, all that has changed. With the massive growth in Café Culture, we are now officially, a Nation of Coffee Drinkers. However, we are still relatively new to the “World of Coffee”. Many countries have been major coffee drinkers for centuries.
The coffee bean and drink was introduced into many countries from their native Ethiopia over the course of 600 Years. (See the Story of Coffee in a Nutshell PDF). Many countries within the “tropics” produce Coffee Beans. The growing of beans and preparation of the final roasted beans is similar to that of Wine production. Country of origin, type and genetics of the bean, climate, altitude, soil, blend and the ultimate roasting process all affect the taste “profile” of coffee. The final process is of course, the correct preparation of the coffee drink itself. It is at this point that it could all go sadly wrong!
